Yajurveda Chapter 36 Mantra 3 - Gayatri Mantra

भूर्भुव: स्व: तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं । भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि, धीयो यो न: प्रचोदयात्

Bhur bhuvah svah tatsavitur varenyam bhargo devasya dhimahi dhiyo yo nah prachodayat

Translation:

  • (Bhur) The self-existent Supreme God is the one who manifests the Earth realm through His divine word.
  • (Bhuvah) He also manifests higher divine realms like Golok through speech.
  • (Svah) These are heavenly abodes filled with bliss.
  • (Tat) That
  • (Savitur) Supreme God is the originator and creator of all.
  • (Vareniyam) He is worthy of being chosen and worshipped by all true devotees, that is, He is the adorable Lord of noble souls.
  • (Bhargo) His form is radiant, full of divine light.
  • (Devasya) Of that Supreme God
  • (Dhimahi) we should contemplate with deep understanding and noble thoughts.
  • (Dhiyo yo nah prachodayat) The one who inspires our intellect like a wise being—such a discerning soul becomes eligible for liberation.

Meaning:

The Supreme God is self-existent; He is the creator of the Earth, Golok, and even the heavenly realms. Devotion to that radiant Supreme Being should be done by noble devotees with the understanding that He is the Purushottam (the Supreme among all gods), greater than all other deities. One should worship Him, who is the giver of all happiness and the eternal abode of bliss.
