Kavir Dev, also known as Saint Kabir, is revered as a divine spiritual leader and an eternal messenger of truth. Unlike ordinary beings, he is believed to have manifested as an infant on a lotus flower in Lahar Tala, Varanasi, rather than being born from a mother’s womb. His teachings, expressed in profound yet simple verses, challenge blind rituals and emphasize the pursuit of true spiritual knowledge (gyan). Kavir Dev is known for revealing the ultimate reality of God and guiding seekers toward liberation (moksha) through devotion to the Supreme Being. His wisdom transcends religious boundaries, advocating that all living beings belong to one universal race, and true religion lies in recognizing the Supreme Truth. His discourses with various religious figures, including Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Muhammad, highlight his role as a divine teacher sent to illuminate the path of salvation.
The name Kavir Dev is explicitly mentioned in the Vedas as the name of the Supreme God. One such reference is in Yajurveda, Chapter 40, Mantra 8, the term "Kavir Manishi" is used, which refers to the Supreme God who is all-knowing and self-existent. The word "Kavir" is the actual name of Supreme God, signifying the divine entity who has crafted the entire creation with His supreme wisdom. The suffix "Dev" further confirms His divine status. Kavir Dev is described in the Vedas as the eternal, self-manifested God who imparts true knowledge (Tatvagyan) and grants liberation to souls. This reference aligns with the belief that Kavir Dev, also known as Saint Kabir, is the Supreme God who descended to guide humanity. His teachings clarify that while Vedic knowledge is significant, it does not fully reveal the method to attain the Supreme God, which He Himself has come to disclose. The Vedas subtly indicate that worship of Kavir Dev leads to liberation, and His true identity is revealed only to those who seek beyond the material realm through His divine wisdom.
The names Kabir and Kavir are one and the same, both referring to Supreme God Kavir Dev (Kabir Sahib). The difference in spelling arises due to linguistic variations across different languages and scriptures. In Vedic texts, including Rigveda (9.96.17), the name "Kavir Dev" is used, where "Kavir" signifies the Supreme Being who has designed the entire creation. Over time, in regional languages like Hindi, the pronunciation evolved to "Kabir", but the essence remains unchanged. Whether it is "Kabir" or "Kavir," both denote the same eternal God who descended on earth to impart true spiritual knowledge (Tatvagyan). He revealed the secrets of creation, the identity of Kaal, and the path to liberation, proving that He is the Supreme God mentioned in the Vedas and other scriptures.
The Vedas, the most revered and foundational scriptures of Sanatan Dharma, contain deep and hidden references to the identity, nature, and attributes of the Supreme God. These references, when understood through the lens of true spiritual knowledge, clearly reveal that Kavir Dev, mentioned repeatedly in the Vedas, is none other than God Kabir—who descended on Earth in 1398 CE in Varanasi. This article explores these divine attributes found in the Vedas and connects them to the life and teachings of God Kabir.
According to Rigveda Mandal 9 Sukt 96 Mantra 17, the Supreme God Kavir Dev resides in the eternal and supreme abode far above all other realms. This place is called Satlok. It is free from birth, death, suffering, and illusion. No material body or karmic bondage exists there. It is the true eternal home of all souls.
Atharva Veda Kaand 4 Anuvaak 1 Mantra 7 states:
“The Supreme Being lives in the highest realm, managing all from above.”
This directly aligns with the description of Satlok, the highest eternal place, where Kavir Dev sits on a throne like a divine King.
Rigveda Mandal 9 Sukt 96 Mantra 18 reveals that Kavir Dev, is seated in Satlok, and Rigveda Mandal 9 Sukt 82 Mantra 2 mention that He instantly reaches Earth and appears to his devotees in a flash, meaning He reaches earth at a great speed.
The Rigveda further describes Kavir Dev as a royal figure, seated with a crown on His head. This divine imagery indicates the majestic and authoritative status of the Supreme God. God Kabir, in His own verses, has described Satlok as a radiant kingdom, and Himself as Sahib, the Sovereign of that divine realm.
According to Rigveda Mandal 9 Sukt 96 Mantra 16–20, the Supreme God comes to Earth in a clandestine manner, without public spectacle, and imparts the true spiritual path only to the virtuous, those who seek liberation. This matches the life of Kabir Sahib, who met selected devotees—like Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Dharamdas Ji, and others—and revealed to them the truth of creation, the way of salvation, and the reality of the Supreme Being.
Rigveda Mandal 9 Sukt 95 Mantra 2 describes Kavir Dev as uttering divine speech (Vani), which provides true knowledge and inspires souls toward liberation-giving worship. God Kabir’s entire life on Earth was dedicated to giving spiritual knowledge in poetic form—known as Kabir Vani—to remove ignorance and guide souls toward salvation.
The Yajurveda Chapter 40 Mantra 17 mentions a hidden face behind a golden cover which is the symbol of the secret knowledge of salvation that only the Supreme God can uncover. Rigveda Mandal 9 Sukt 95 Mantra 2 also states that Kavir Dev creates new mantras and gives them to His devotees.
God Kabir is the only spiritual figure who gave secret salvation mantras (Om-Tat-Sat) and explained their true meanings through Tatvagyan. He fulfilled this divine task exactly as described in the Vedas.
Multiple verses such as Rigveda Mandal 9 Sukt 94 Mantra 1 and Mandal 9 Sukt 96 Mantra 17 describe Kavir Dev as behaving like a poet ("Kavi")—who speaks in couplets, quatrains, and poetic riddles, filled with supreme spiritual wisdom.
This trait perfectly mirrors Kabir Sahib, who is universally known as a "Mahakavi" (great poet). His dohe (couplets) and shabads (hymns) are not just poetry but divine revelations which reveal the true path to God.
Rigveda Mandal 9 Sukt 1 Mantra 9 refers to the infant Supreme God who is nourished by maiden cows, indicating that when He appears on Earth, He does not take birth from a womb, but manifests directly and is cared for divinely.
This was literally fulfilled in the life of God Kabir, who appeared on a lotus flower as a baby and was found and cared for by a weaver couple, Neeru and Neema. He did not have a biological mother, aligning precisely with the Vedic description.
All the divine attributes described in the Vedas—His residence in the highest realm, His instantaneous descent to Earth, His poetic knowledge, His secret appearance, and His child form nourished by nature—can only be attributed to God Kabir.
He appeared in 1398 CE in Varanasi, not as a poet-saint alone, but as the Supreme Being Himself, fulfilling every sign and attribute mentioned in the Vedas.
Thus, Kavir Dev ≡ Kabir Sahib, and He alone is Param Akshar Brahm, the Supreme God as per the holy Vedas.
